AFIS and AG Positions with RNP Approaches¶
This will explain the expected actions when an RNP approach is conducted to an airport that is staffed by Air/Ground Radio (AG) or an Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS).
This applies generically to all airports in this situation, though at the time of writing the airports of relevance are:
- Kemble (EGBP)
- Sherbern-in-Elmet (EGCJ)
- Leeds East (EGCM)
- Campbeltown (EGEC)
- Walney (EGNL)
- Islay (EGPI)
- Barra (EGPR)
- Tiree (EGPU)
Position Specific Guidance¶
VATSIMism
Realistic procedures for an RNP Approach typically include prior notification to the facility, which is communicated to nearby LARS providers. Often a specific LARS provider will provide a service to the aircraft whilst they commence the RNP. This is not practical on VATISM due to the limited amount of LARS service provision, combined with the more sporadic nature of pilot planning. Therefore, when a pilot wishes to perform an RNP procedure at such an airport, they will not be required to provide prior notice.
The following guidance should be followed by the relevant controllers.
LARS Provider
A LARS provider may offer a service to these pilots, however being in communication will not be mandatory where the procedure remains outside controlled airspace. The LARS provider shall issue the most accurate QNH they are able to these pilots and inform the AFIS/AG controller of the expected inbound.
How long it is appropriate for the LARS controller to retain the pilot will be dependent on the procedure and the traffic situation, however a LARS provider should endeavour to have transferred communication as soon as practical and no later than the Final Approach Fix.
The LARS provider is not providing an Approach Control Service and must not issue an approach clearance.
Area Control
Area Control will not be expected to provide LARS services for these approach types and will only be responsible for service provision if a procedure enters controlled airspace that they are covering top-down. In this situation, it is very acceptable to provide reduced service and/or transfer the aircraft early due to workload.
AFIS/AG
The FISO/Radio Operator is not expected to provide a ‘gap’ or priority handling to the RNP approach traffic, as they are not providing control services. Realistic procedures involving booking/reserving time for such an approach are not followed on VATSIM.
Upon receipt of an RNP approach from a LARS provider, the AFIS/AG controller shall provide information to the aircraft as they would any other inbound. Likewise information should be provided to other pilots where relevant.
Where a pilot performing an RNP approach puts itself in contact with a FISO/Radio Operator when the LARS unit is offline, the QNH should be passed and appropriate position reports should be acknowledged. No other specific procedures are required.
Note
The AIP may include mandatory RT calls. This typically consists of:
- Reporting the IAF, IF and FAF
- Reporting 2NM final
- Reporting clear of the runway or going around
