Altimeter Setting Procedures¶
All arriving and departing aircraft will operate on the Leeds QNH, except aircraft intending to remain in the circuit who will operate on the Leeds QFE (QNH - 23 hPa). The Leeds QFE is available on request.
The Transition Altitude within the Leeds CTR and CTA is 5000 ft.
The Transition Level and Minimum Flight Level are derived in accordance with MATS Part 1 Appendix A, except that QNH 1013 hPa is considered ‘high pressure’ (i.e. the minimum flight level is FL60 when the QNH is 1013 hPa).

The Leeds CTR/CTA lies within the Barnsley ASR.
Runways and Instrument Approach Procedures¶
When the tailwind compponent is less than 5 knots, the preferred runway is Runway 32.
A CAT III ILS is available for Runway 32 (I-LF 110.90 MHz
), and a CAT I ILS is available for Runway 14 (I-LBF 110.90 MHz
).
LOC and NDB DME approaches are available for both runways.
Runway 14 has an ILS Z and Y approach. The ILS Y approach is only available to CAT A/B aircraft and has a platform altitude of 2600 ft; the ILS Z approach is only available to CAT C/D aircraft and has a platform altitude of 3000 ft.
Note
Both the ILS Z and Y for Runway 14 have a secondary final approach fix at 7.5 miles and at 3500 ft, meaning controllers may clear aircraft for the ILS from 3500 ft instead of instructing them to descend via the glidepath.
Low Visibility Procedures¶
To safeguard operations, Taxiways F, M and G shall not be used when the visibility is less than 800 meters.
LVP are enforced when the IRVR is 600 metres or less, or the cloud ceiling is 200 ft or less. Runway 32 is preferred during periods of low visibility due to the availability of a CAT III ILS. During LVP:
- Conditional clearances shall not be issued
- Category II/III holding points shall be used (B, D1, F1, L1 and N1)
- Vacating aircraft shall join taxiway A via B, C or D3
VATSIMism
In the real world, Leeds does not have an SMR and the AIR controller relies on pilot position reports during LVP. Traffic is instructed to "report holding at [holding point]” and to "report vacated”.
VATSIM controllers can access an SMR, so taxiing via position reports is not mandated on the network, but ADC may elect to enforce it.
VFR Procedures¶
The circuit direction is variable at a height of 1500 ft.
AIR is responsible for traffic in the visual circuit and operating with reference to the aerodrome or transiting the ATZ. The ATZ is established at 2.5 NM radius around the midpoint of the runway up to 2000 ft AAL. VFR inbounds will be coordinated with ADC and typically transferred with the field in sight.
DEL shall request VFR departure clearances from RAD. All VFR departures are subject to release from RAD.
Leeds has numerous Visual Reference Points (VRPs) established around the aerodrome. Traffic will usually route via a VRP, not above altitude 3000 ft.
Helicopter traffic into Leeds Heliport/Coney Park (a small heliport located 1 NM north of the Runway 14 threshold) shall be cleared to enter the CTR by RAD and transferred to AIR when approaching the ATZ. AIR shall issue the Leeds Bradford surface wind, along with a "land at your discretion” instruction. Departing helicopters will make initial contact with AIR (who shall request a clearance from RAD) and should be instructed to "lift at your discretion”.
Local SSR Code Procedures¶

is allocated as the Leeds Bradford conspicuity code and shall not be used for traffic requiring identification.

Leeds East and Sherburn RNP Approaches¶
Leeds East/Fenton (EGCM) has an RNP approach for Runway 06 which starts inside Leeds Bradford CTA 1. Sherburn (EGCJ) has an RNP approach for Runway 10 which starts 1000 ft below Leeds Bradford CTA 1.
Where able, traffic should be cleared to transit controlled airspace via the IAF and descended to the platform altitude. Radar must not clear aircraft on the RNP approach; traffic should be transferred to Fenton Radio or Sherburn Radio as soon as possible.
