IFR Departure Instructions

Standard Departure Routes (SDR) are notified for flights joining the ATS route network. Aircraft may be told to “expect” a particular SDR at start-up however, they shall not be issued a departure clearance until the appropriate coordination has taken place (this is usually during taxi).

ADC will prenote APC when departing ATS route network traffic starts. Once APC has received the clearance from TMS DIR, they will coordinate this with ADC, who shall then relay the clearance to the aircraft.

In the absence of APC, the ADC controller shall prenote at start-up and then, at a convenient time, coordinate directly with TMS DIR (or the appropriate top-down controller) to obtain the departure clearance.

ADC shall generate a UKCP general code for traffic joining the ATS route network.

Radiotelephony

NJE804Q, hold at A2, this will be a LYD2 standard departure route, climb to altitude 2400 ft, squawk 2070.

Direction Designator Via Route
North BPK 2 L10 / N601 DET – N601 – BPK
North East DAGGA 2 M604 DET – M604 – DAGGA
South East DVR 2 L9 / L10 / Q70 DET – L6 – DVR or DET – Q70 – VABIK
South / South West LYD 2 M189 DET – LYD
West SAXBI N27 DET – N601 – BPK – SAXBI

Note

Before joining the SDR, all IFR departures are subject to the noise abatement procedure - see General - Noise Abatement Procedures.

Departures to Luton (EGGW) or Stansted (EGSS) shall be instructed to follow the BPK 2 SDR to DET, and then join the DET 2A STAR. Coordination should be as usual.

Non-ATS Route IFR departures shall be coordinated with APC who will provide an after departure routing. This traffic shall be instructed to squawk code 7047.

Departure Releases

A release is required from APC for every departure, both IFR and VFR. In the release, the departure route may be modified.

If there is IFR traffic inbound to Biggin within 10 NM, APC will issue a “released subject [callsign of inbound aircraft]”. ADC may then depart the aircraft at an appropriate moment, giving traffic information as required:

Radiotelephony

(To landing aircraft) G-ZA, traffic is a Citation Longitude departing now with a right turn through the overheard, climbing to altitude 2400 ft, IFR.

(To departing aircraft) N-1QS, traffic is a TBM on a 5 mile final for Runway 21, surface wind...

Biggin ADC should exercise caution when departing aircraft when inbounds are within 10 NM, especially during periods of IMC – the aircraft may not be able to see each other, especially in the event of a go-around. While the pilots remain responsible for separation outside of controlled airspace, ADC must not issue instructions that are likely to cause a conflict. In particular:

  • During Runway 03 operations, departing traffic should be held until the inbound is established visually in the lefthand downwind.

  • During Runway 21 operations, consideration must be made of aircraft performance, if a high performance inbound makes an early go-around then there is the potential for conflict in the aerodrome overhead.

In the absence of APC, the ADC controller shall obtain releases from TMS DIR (or the appropriate top-down controller as described in the following section).

Departure Hand-off Order

All VFR departures are to be transferred to APC once aerodrome conflictions are resolved.

In the absence of APC, departures are to be transferred in accordance with the following:

Callsign Position Logon Controller Identifier Frequency (MHz)
Thames Director THAMES_APP TMS 132.700
TC South East LTC_SE_CTR TCSE 120.530
TC South LTC_S_CTR TCS 134.125
TC Bandbox LTC_CTR TC 135.805
AC Dover LON_D_CTR LD 134.905
AC South LON_S_CTR LS 129.430
AC South Central LON_SC_CTR LSC 132.605
AC Bandbox LON_CTR L 127.830

Note

The radiotelephony callsign is "Thames Director" for TMS DIR and "London Control" for all other positions.

IFR Arrivals

IFR arrivals will be transferred to ADC once established on the final approach track, in the landing order.

Traffic performing a circle to land approach for Runway 03 will be coordinated with ADC, ideally prior to 10 NM. ADC should instruct circle to land approaches to “report breaking right to circle left downwind” once established on the approach.

Missed Approach Procedures

The standard missed approach procedures are published on the instrument approach charts. ADC shall inform City Director of a missed approach. City Director shall then issue missed approach instructions (if different from the standard) and the frequency for the aircraft to contact.
